Cooper Drum Site Public Health Assessment

Timeframe:  2006 to Present

The Cooper Drum Site is a Superfund site on the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priority List.  The facility reconditioned steel drums, a process that involves multiple chemicals including sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, PCBs, and metals. The site had been in operation since 1948, resulting in widespread contamination both on-site and off-site.   Under a cooperative agreement with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the California Department of Public Health, IAI conducted two public health assessment for the Cooper Drum Site.  As a part of the assessment, IAI staff visited the site, interviewed concerned residents, and reviewed existing data on toxic chemical releases reported to the US EPA, groundwater sampling, and air quality data from the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
