Subsistence Fishing and Hunting
Members of certain societies around the world continue to harvest, share, and consume wild food resources on a regular basis. In indigenous societies especially, the knowledge and skills involved in subsistence hunting and fishing comprise significant aspects of shared cultural life. IAI provides government agencies with clear insight into the nature and importance of subsistence pursuits and related cultural activities among indigenous people in the U.S., and the ways in which such activities have been integrated with and affected by modern ways of living. This research provides fundamental information to agencies that assess and mitigate threats to the biophysical environment and its use for acquisition of food and continuity of culture.
