Halaco Engineering Company Public Health Assessment

Timeframe:  2007 to 2010

The Halaco Engineering Company was nominated to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)'s National Priority List in 2007.  Under a cooperative agreement with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the California Department of Public Health, IAI conducted an evaluation of the health impacts from the contamination at the site, and presented our findings and recommendations.  IAI determined there were several exposure scenarios that posed significant risk to workers and the neighboring community.  We also found a possible association between exposure to Halaco contaminants and preterm birth.  Based on these findings, IAI staff recommended a number of actions which are currently being implemented by the US EPA.
