Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is a research and development institution for science and technology applied to national security located in Livermore, California. Its primary mission is to support the United States' nuclear weapons program by ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons through the application of advanced science, engineering, and technology. In addition, LLNL is also involved in biomedicine, energy, lasers, magnetic fusion energy, and environmental science research. Due to chemical contamination of the groundwater in 1987, LLNL was added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Priorities List. Under a cooperative agreement with the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), IAI conducted a number of research and educational activities related to LLNL.
In 1999, IAI published an analysis of the water quality of suppliers that serve the city of Livermore, and the identification of the private wells located in the vicinity of LLNL. That same year, IAI completed a health consultation on the health impact of plutonium contamination in Big Tree Park, located adjacent to LLNL. In 2003, ATSDR engaged IAI to develop a process for federal agencies to address the historic distribution of contaminated sewage sludge from LLNL. IAI completed a health consultation on community concerns in Livermore, with recommendations for community involvement in ongoing activities as well as a review of relevant health studies.
