Laytonville Landfill Public Health Assessment

Timeframe: 2000 to 2005

The Laytonville Landfill is located near Laytonville Rancheria, California, home of the Cahto Tribe, and operated as a municipal waste landfill from 1974 to 1993.

In response to community concerns regarding possible health effects from past and current exposures, IAI conducted a public health assessment to evaluate the potential health risks from exposure to contaminated air, water, and surface soil. IAI also investigated the number of cancer death among residents from 1974 to 1994 living near the landfill. IAI identified possible health risks from leakage on the landfill property; cancer mortality rates within a one-mile radius of the landfill were similar to those for Mendocino County as a whole.
