Timeframe: 1999 to 2007
Omega Chemical is a solvent and refrigerant recycling and treatment facility located in Whittier, California. In 1999, the California Department of Public Health engaged IAI to conduct a health assessment on the potential health hazards from contaminated soil and groundwater on the site due to improper storage of chemicals and waste. IAI determined that there was not sufficient data from past activities to determine whether Omega Chemical posed a health risk to neighboring residents and workers. IAI identified high concentrations of VOCs in the groundwater both on- and off-site, as well as elevated indoor air concentrations in several nearby businesses. However, the levels were either below those at which health effects are known to affect individuals or there were no completed exposure pathways.
