The Firefighter Occupational Exposures Study (FOX)

Project Timeframe: 2010 to 2013

Firefighters, by the nature of their profession, are exposed to more toxic chemicals than the general population. The Firefighter Occupational Exposures (FOX) study, initiated in 2010, measured more than 75 chemicals in a cohort of firefighters. The study provided information on how the levels of these chemicals measured in firefighters compare to exposures in the general population. FOX and similar studies will help California assess the effectiveness of its current programs to decrease exposures to harmful environmental chemicals and inform policies to improve public health.
